Wisdom Circle: Black Education

“Education is a cornerstone of democracy.” —John Lewis

Congressman Lewis has long been an advocate of public education. This Wisdom Circle is open to those who want to engage in a conversation about understanding the challenges and celebrating the possibilities of Black youth in our current education system. The goal is for us to educate ourselves and figure out ways to better support our youth. Elders in the circle include:

  • Diane Hanks, a retired school administrator with many years of experience in workingat the school and district level.
  • Khaula Murtadah, Vice Chancellor of the IUPUI Family, School, and Neighborhood Engagement, comes with a wealth of knowledge on Black education and has a lot of information on what is happening nationally.
  • Marcus Debro, an Assistant Principal at Bloomington High School North, has many years of on the ground administrative experience.
  • YeVonne Jones, a counselor at Batchelor Middle School, brings a wealth of experience with regards to social and emotional support for Black youth as they matriculate through school, particularly some of the challenges that Black students might face while in school.
